Core Principles
These principles define how we work and treat one another at
Pain & Performance Coach Physical Therapy.
They are adapted from the culture of the All Blacks,
as described in James Kerr's book Legacy,
and translated in the context of the practice.
Every team member is expected to know them, live them, and help protect them.
Sweep the Sheds (Humility)
No one is too senior for the small tasks. Clinicians reset rooms, greet patients, and own the details of
care. Patients and clients share this standard too: re-rack your weights, wipe down equipment, return
handles to hooks, and leave the space ready for the next person. Ownership of the environment is part of
ownership of the work.Play with Purpose
Every session connects to the patient's real goal: returning to sport, lifting a grandchild, sleeping
without pain. We treat the person's “why,” not just the diagnosis.Pass the Ball (Ownership)
Patients/clients are active partners in their recovery, not passive recipients of treatment. Clinicians, in turn,
hold real authority over their caseload and their decisions.Select on Character (No Jerks)
We hire good people first and skilled clinicians second, because the two reinforce each other. We
protect the team culture from ego as deliberately as we protect clinical quality.Keep a Blue Head ( Composure Under Pressure)
Stay calm and task-focused when the stakes rise. We coach patients and staff alike to self-regulate
through pain flares, setbacks, and high-pressure moments. Composure is a trainable skill.Train to Win ( Prepare for Real Demands)
Rehab mirrors the true demands of the patient's life or sport. We load, stress-test, and close the gap
between “cleared in clinic” and “ready for reality” before discharge.Embrace Expectations (Raise the Standard)
We hold high, honest standards for outcomes and hold patients to their plan. Lowering the bar out of
sympathy rarely serves the people in our care.Be a Good Ancestor (Legacy)
Leave it better than we found it. Every patient outcome and every teammate we mentor extends the
practice beyond any one of us. We build systems, reputation, and people that last.
